Recycle Organics Expands Climate Action in Grenada with its Home Composting Program

The Recycle Organics Program is set to kick off its fourth home composting initiative in Grenada, following successful launches in Guyana, Belize, and Saint Lucia.

Recycle Organics (RO) will kick off the new year with the launch of its home composting program in Grenada, following successful country visits in Guyana, Belize and Saint Lucia. With climate finance support from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), RO aims to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector while promoting sustainable waste management practices in multiple communities across the country.

Throughout the week of January 27, the Recycle Organics team will be distributing complete home composting setups to communities throughout the country. Composting bins and kits will be distributed to communities in:

  • Clozier, St. John
  • William and Chantimelle, St. Patrick
  • Badia, Corinth, St. David
  • Grenville Vale, St. George
  • Dunfermlin Housing Scheme, St. Andrew
  • True Blue and Lance Aux Epines, St. George
  • Limlair, Mt. Royal and Mt. Pleasant, Carriacou

Residents will participate in composting workshops where they will learn effective composting practices, ensuring the long-term success of the initiative.

Participants will receive free home composting bins and equipment as part of the program, while supplies last. To ensure success, participants will also attend a training session to learn practical techniques for establishing and maintaining a composting system at home.

This is your chance to make a meaningful contribution to a greener future for Grenada while learning valuable skills and reducing your household’s environmental footprint. Sign up today!

"Canada is pleased to support Recycle Organics with a contribution to help Grenada reduce methane emissions from waste, helping the country meet its climate goals. This funding will drive real, on-the-ground actions that address climate challenges and create long-term benefits to build greater climate resilience across the island."

Grenada’s recent experiences with Hurricane Beryl, alongside other climate impacts like flooding and droughts, underscore the urgency of mitigating emissions. Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell emphasized these challenges at COP29, noting the critical need for real, immediate action.

Home composting is a proven, cost-effective method for managing organic waste. It reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills, mitigates methane emissions and enriches soil. Furthermore, it promotes education within communities, teaching sustainable practices and strengthening environmental awareness.

“The devastating impacts of Hurricane Beryl this past year remind us of the immense challenges SIDS face in adapting to a warming planet,” said ImplementaSur Director Gerardo Canales. “By launching the Home Composting Program in Grenada, we aim not only to address methane emissions from organic waste but to also support communities in building resilience and fostering sustainable waste management practices. This is a step towards empowering Grenadians to take actionable climate solutions into their own hands.”

Supporting Sustainable Waste Practices through Education and Policy

In addition to the Home Composting Program, RO will launch an Organic Waste Management Network and Educational Program for Source Separation. With the kind support of Grenada’s Ministry of Education, this will involve schools implementing organic waste activities, such as gardening and composting, in collaboration with local communities.

Learning new skills and engaging in these organic waste management activities will inherently provide therapeutic opportunities for students and teachers in Carriacou, following the devastation of Hurricane Beryl, which destroyed 98% of the island’s infrastructure, including homes, schools and hospitals. The Network will build on the GSWMA’s Environmentally Friendly Schools Initiative to expand the program and encourage knowledge-sharing on composting and source separation amongst local communities.

RO will also conduct a waste characterization study at the Perseverance landfill, collecting data during both peak and low tourist seasons. The study will analyze organic waste composition and sources and provide valuable insights to support the GSWMA’s waste diversion strategies.

Finally, RO will help develop an organic waste management plan for Grenada’s national solid waste management strategy, focusing on composting solutions, food waste reduction and maximizing waste recovery.

About the Recycle Organics Program

Recycle Organics, led by CCAP and ImplementaSur, operates in over 20 countries around the world and has the potential to mitigate up to 30.1 million tons of CO2e. It focuses on developing policies and projects to expand organic waste treatment technologies and reduce methane emissions, especially in vulnerable regions like SIDS.
