Commissioned by the Global Methane Hub, the survey highlights that a substantial 87% of respondents acknowledge the impact of climate change on their lives, with 24% describing it as “extreme.”
The first international poll on climate change and harmful methane gas emissions conducted by the Benenson Strategy Group on behalf of the Global Methane Hub reveals widespread support for reducing methane emissions to mitigate the effects of climate change. These findings are particularly significant given that nearly a quarter of respondents indicate experiencing an “extreme” impact from climate change.
Discussing the survey with Chilean newspaper El Mercurio on behalf of the Recycle Organics program, ImplementaSur Director Gerardo Canales said, “it is encouraging to observe a growing public awareness of climate change; the first crucial step is acknowledging the existence of the problem. The challenge ahead is to transition towards implementing solutions.”
The survey was conducted in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Germany, India, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, South Korea, Senegal, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
In Chile, findings reveal that 58% of respondents are familiar with methane, with 55% attributing it to a negative impact on the climate. Against this backdrop, 90% express support for implementing measures to reduce methane emissions within the waste sector.
“The fact that our society acknowledges landfills as an unsuitable destination for this waste and recognizes the necessity of diverting as much organic waste as possible from landfills marks a significant advancement,” Canales added.
